The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu – It’s Grim Up North

12th April 2021 · 1990s, 1991, Dance, Music

Filmed in a downpour against leaden skies and the synthesised diesel roar of a motorway, this rave anthem – another list song – lives up to its title.

Against pounding industrial techno rhythms, the names of northern towns are recited deadpan amid the deluge before taking an unexpected turn into an orchestral arrangement of Jerusalem.

I’ve always had a soft spot for pop provocateurs and art pranksters Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, aka The KLF, The Timelords, The JAMMs, Kingboy D and Rockman Rock. Not least because I joined them on their 1994 Turner Prize prank.

It’s Grim Up North began life as a nine-minute club mix with Pete Wylie reading out the town names against a background of heavy rain and heavier traffic, leading into a fully orchestrated arrangement of Jerusalem before the song fades out, leaving the sound of a howling wind and the caws of a crow.

This is the shorter version, re-recorded with Drummond reciting the names, which reached no.10 in 1991 – the year in which The KLF were, thanks to trance anthems like 3am Eternal, Last Train To Trancentral and the Tammy Wynette country-rave hybrid Justified And Ancient, the best-selling singles artists in the world.

Conceptually and aurally it’s a work of genius: it should be the new national anthem.
