Here’s a song for Mothers Day – from the first of the great girl groups way way back in 1961.
OK, so it’s just a commercialised event created for florists and chocolatiers to cash in… and even the woman who invented it objected to that.
Anna Jarvis actually organised a boycott and threatened lawsuits against Hallmark after successfully campaigning for Mothers Day to be recognised in 1907.
She maintained, rightly, that it was a day for sentiment rather than profit. Still, being a mother can be the hardest job in the world. And you don’t get paid.
So a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers is the least we can offer in return… or a song. And what could be more appropriate than a song – this song – by the first major girl group of them all.
