The Stone Roses – Fools Gold

I have to confess I wasn’t swept away with the baggy revolution at the time but I did come around to The Stone Roses’ debut album.

And while I never got to see them, I did see Ian Brown do nearly all of the album live – all except I Am The Resurrection, as I recall – backed by a Stone Roses tribute band.

Interviewing him at the time, he was keen to make the point that they had played more gigs than the original band, knew the songs better and had fewer drug problems.

And, he could have added, they could bear to be in the same room as him at the same time. Which gave them a huge advantage.

One of them, I recall, had a day job as an executive at an oil company in Aberdeen. Ian was a pleasant enough chap, of an earnest and serious disposition – though this was thankfully long before he became a raving anti-vaxxer.

And he’s the only person I’ve ever interviewed who ended our encounter by inviting me to “come backstage and have a smoke” after the show.
