The Stylistics – You Make Me Feel Brand New

14th February 2021 · 1970s, 1974, Music

The smoothest and sweetest soul balladeers of the era, The Stylistics’ signature sound was built around the lush Philly productions of Thom Bell and the soaring falsetto of Russell Thompkins Jr.

Unlike most of their many hits, the lead vocals on this song – written by the enduring partnership of Bell and Linda Creed – are essentially a duet between Thompkins and Airrion Love’s tenor.

The Stylistics formed in the late Sixties from the embers of two other vocal groups, The Percussions and The Monarchs but found success when they signed to Avco, where Bell had taken The Delfonics to soul stardom, and he took them under his wing.

Every single Bell produced for them became a top ten R&B hit and many (Betcha By Golly Wow, You Are Everything, You Make Me Feel Brand New, I’m Stone In Love With You, Break Up To Make Up) were top ten pop hits too.

This song reached No.2 in the UK chart and sold more than a million copies, giving The Stylistics their fifth gold disc. But it would be their last with Bell, the band breaking away to forgre an even easier-listening – and, in the UK, even more successful – style with new producer Van McCoy.
