TR/ST – Candy Walls

17th October 2024 · 2010s, 2012, Music

When this song came on in the latest series of Industry I thought it might be by Tindersticks. But it’s not: it’s the debut single of Canadian duo TR/ST.

Its blend of sparkly synthpop and grimy industrial beats is the perfect backdrop for the warm baritone of Robert Alfons, and also for the raunch of the TV show it soundtracked.

Alfons formed the band in 2009 with Maya Postepski, drummer in like-minded band Austra. She left after their 2012 debut album TRST to return to Austra and launch a solo project called Princess Century, while Alfons carried on under the TR/ST name, incorporating house and techno in later releases.

There’s something wonderfully otherworldly about their sound, which seems filled with the sort of sexual tension you might feel in a nightclub just before it closes down in the early hours. The raunch factor is couched in cryptic lyrics, such as this: “Fondle candy walls, Evening is slime, What a waste of time.”

More recently TR/ST teamed up with Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters for a cover of the Pet Shop Boys’ Being Boring.
