Tropical Fuck Storm – You Let My Tyres Down

Tropical Fuck Storm grew out of Australia’s noisemongers The Drones – and make even more of a glorious racket than them.

I’ll admit I was first drawn by the name: I mean, what’s not to like?! And, pleasingly, they sound exactly like I’d expected them to sound… mangled, bruised, distorted chaos.

They specialise in the old quiet-loud-quiet-loud dynamic and when they get loud they get REALLY loud, with squalls of noise that sound exactly like you’d imagine a tropical storm to sound like. Except, as the MC says when introducing them in this live clip, “sweatier.”

I was drawn further in when I found out that the Australian band comprise two former members of The Drones, of whom I was also a fan, especially of their uncompromising live shows.

Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin formed the TFS when The Drones went on hiatus in 2016 with Lauren Hammel (from High Tension) on drums and Erica Dunn (Mod Con, Harmony, Palm Springs) on guitar and keyboards.

I was going to post the video for this number, You Let My Tyres Down, but it’s one of those ones YouTube won’t allow to be posted anywhere else. So here they are performing it live for a radio station.

It comes from their 2018 album A Laughing Death In Meatspace, and I’d recommend popping over to YouTube to watch the official video, which has overtones of a grisly horror movie – exactly the tone you would expect them to strike.
