X-Ray Spex – Oh Bondage, Up Yours!

21st May 2022 · 1970s, 1977, Music, Punk

This is surely one of the most memorable singles to emerge from the punk era. Everyone remembers its rallying cry, and Poly Styrene’s immortal intro: “Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard. But I think… OH BONDAGE! UP YOURS!!”

The first time I saw X-Ray Spex was at the Man in the Moon on the Kings Road in May 1977. The support act was The Ants, making what I believe was their own live debut.

It remains one of the loudest gigs I’ve ever attended.

I remember sheltering behind a pillar to escape the pain caused to my ears by Poly’s shrill shrieking and the equally high-pitched honking of 16-year-old Lora Logic’s sax.

I also remember the audience being made up of punk royalty (not that we would ever have used such a word) with members of the Pistols, Clash and Damned everywhere you looked.

This wasn’t a hit but it went on to appear on the live compilation album The Roxy London WC2 which came out in July that year, featuring further live performances by Wire, Buzzcocks, Eater, The Adverts, Slaughter & The Dogs and The Unwanted.
