Project Gemini – Colours & Light

I’m not always a fan of slavishly retro sounds but I can make an exception for the funky, murky psychedelia of Project Gemini – the musical vision of Paul Osborne.

Inspired by ’70s film music, psychedelia, breakbeat-heavy funk and sunshine pop, Osborne injects his influences with enough melodic invention and sonic craft to make it more than mere revivalism.

Originally a bass guitarist in various bands, since becoming a father in 2010 he has recorded in his home studio with a cast of similarly minded friends from bands like Soundcarriers and Little Barrie.

The Children of Scorpio demonstrated his love of Lalo Schifrin’s score to Dirty Harry and was followed by a 2019 release of two spooky psychedelic instrumentals – Forest Creeper and Monsters At Garden’s End.

Working with two Israeli musicians, drummer Shuzin and keyboardist Markey Funk, he followed it with two more similar instrumentals, Path Through the Forest and The Ritual, earning a belated release by Mr Bongo for the album The Children Of Scorpio.

Second album Colours & Light, released in April 2024, followed a similar sonic template, adding elements of Turkish psychedelia.
