Anja Huwe / Xmal Deutschland – PolarForest

3rd May 2025 · 2020s, 2025, Music, Postpunk

This is not just a great tune but a cleverly constructed composition – created by combining two tracks recorded 37 years apart.

Anja Huwe is the singer of German post-punk band Xmal Deutschland and this is essentially a mash-up of their 1987 track Polarlicht and her solo song Living In The Forest from last year.

It’s a smart idea, succeeding not only as a piece of music but thematically reinvigorating the connection between Anja’s past and her future.

Huwe came up with it while taking time off in New York after finishing her newest solo album Codes.

While walking down 1st Ave, passing a graffito of “Art is the only solution,” Anja bumped into a guy with a huge 1980s tape recorder blasting a mash-up of two perfectly fitting songs, and had a vision of these two songs working together.

Back in Berlin, Huwe re-recorded bits of “Polarlicht” with composer and audio designer Mona Mur, and blended them with “Living In The Forest,” while original Xmal guitarist Manuela Rickers added the signature “polar” guitar riff.

The older Polarlicht is an exploration of the enchanting beauty of the Northern Lights, with Anja’s repetitive vocal recalling the hypnotic nature of the Aurora Borealis.

Contrasted with her stronger vocals on the new song, the theme and lyrics of the track bring melancholy and subliminal aggression and anger to the mix.

The video features Huwe’s own visual art alongside sequences from an art and dance project (COAX, ARCHETYPE), formed by choreographer and performing artist Rica Blunck and artist Nicolas Anatol Baginsky.
