WhoMadeWho are a Danish trio from Copenhagen with an ever-evolving array of diverse musical influences who began in the mid-2000s.
I’m struggling to think of many famous musicians from Denmark. Inevitably, and unfortunately, the first that spring to mind are the one-hit wonders Aqua and Whigfield, with their equally irritating novelty hits Barbie Girl and Saturday Night.
Then there’s The Raveonettes, who I do actually like. After that? Well the names of Efterklang, Junior Senior, Tina Dico, Mew and Agnes Obel all ring distant bells but I couldn’t name a single song.
So here’s another one: WhoMadeWho are a trio from Copenhagen with pedigrees in rock, jazz, experimental music and jazz, who emerged in the mid-2000s with an indie-meets-dance fusion of punk, funk, folk and disco.
Bassist/vocalist Tomas Høffding had roots in the Scandinavian garage-rock scene while guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg’s made his reputation in New York’s experimental rock and jazz communities, and drummer Tomas Barfod produced releases for dance labels.
A wildly eclectic and inventive outfit, they began to add prog, surf rock and psychedelia to their already diverse array of influences, and gained wider attention when this song was covered by Queens of the Stone Age leader Josh Homme’s side project The 5.15ers.
They received another boost when they headlined the 2007 Benicàssim Festival in Spain – by default – after The Klaxons turned up too late for their slot.
The Danish trio has also toured with LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk and Franz Ferdinand, and collaborated with the Mark Lanegan Band on a split single that saw WhoMadeWho cover Lanegan’s Deep Black Vanishing Train.
Other recordings in their eclectic repertoire include an electronic cover of Björk’s Violently Happy, a forerunner of their dive into electronica on their most recent album UUUU in 2022.
