Rilo Kiley – With Arms Outstretched

A reunited Rilo Kiley performing their campfire singalong With Arms Outstretched as an encore at The Roundhouse in London last night.

I’m not normally one for mass singalongs but last night at The Roundhouse was an exception. This was the first song I ever heard by Rilo Kiley and when my daughter Lily was small we used to sing it at home.

Months ago, when I didn’t even know they had reunited, she kindly bought tickets for us – me, Lily, her boyfriend Andy and her brother Theo – to relive those days.

It was magical.

I’m not normally one for nostalgia either but I was happy to wallow in it for an hour and a half, hearing so many old favourites in the venue where I spent Sunday nights in my teens seeing some of my most memorable gigs (Patti Smith, Ramones, Talking Heads…).

So this was the highlight for me: a song that on record sounds like a campfire singalong in the studio – and sounds even better with 3,000 fans joining in what is not a natural singalong lyric:

“Now some days, they last longer than others / But this day by the lake went too fast / And if you want me you better speak up, I won’t wait / So you better move fast.”
