Little Simz – Young

This new track by Little Simz, a defiant celebration of self-reliance, is all about the video, in which she plays a poverty-stricken punk granny living life to the full.

With its loose, bouncy swagger, Young is built around a rubbery bassline and a basic beat, but really they’re only there to help the narrative along, in much the same way as early tunes by The Streets.

I’ve always thought the Islington girl is one of the biggest UK musical talents – a view confirmed by her amazing Glastonbury performance two years ago – and this is so specifically British/English.

It’s there in the accent, there in the story of a young / old woman navigating poverty, pride and resourcefulness, and there in the references to bingo, booze, beat cops and English breakfasts. And Amy Winehouse.

Simbi uses humour to hide her hard-hitting jabs in a song – story – that’s got a lot more to say about urban life (poverty, racism, ageism) than might appear from its playful tone and light-hearted references.

Most songwriters are storytellers, distilling their narrative into bite-size chunks, and that’s even more true in the realm of hip-hop. So I guess we shouldn’t be surprised to find her playing a role – visually and vocally.

So convincing is Simz in her prosthetic-clad role that one of the crew didn’t even realise it was her when they met on location for the shoot, the second half of which is filmed up the road from me at The Shacklewell Arms.

The tune, Young, comes from her forthcoming album Lotus, and shares its theme.

“Regardless of what you’ve been through, or how you grew up, you can always become someone extraordinary,” as she says in her must-watch Chicken Shop Dates interview with Amelia Dimoldenberg:
