Here’s another Northern Soul classic, courtesy of The Younghearts from Los Angeles, California. This was their debut single in 1967, with a falsetto vocal that calls to mind Smokey Robinson.
The group was first formed at high school in 1961 by classmates Bobby Solomon and Charles Ingersoll, under the original name The Extreems.
They had an R&B hit with their debut single, a lovely doo-wop song called The Bells, but soon split and the two founders joined forces with a three-girl group called The Blossoms, singing background vocals on recordings by Phil Spector and Dobie Gray, among others.
In 1967 Solomon and Ingersoll put together a new quartet with James Moore and Ron Preyer, calling themselves The Younghearts.
Once again they had an immediate R&B hit with this, their first single, and followed it up with another, Oh, I’ll Never Be The Same, and an album for the Mint label called Sweet Soul Shakin’ producing several more singles – I’ve Got Love For My Baby, Girls Girls Girls and a lovely version of Misty.
In their heyday The Younghearts toured with soul stars including The Temptations, The Miracles, The Supremes, The Dells and The Delfonics – and even The Rolling Stones.
Ingersoll also performed with other artists – he sings on Sly & The Family Stone’s classic Thank You (For Lettin’ Me Be Myself Again)
