Kim Gordon – Play Me

13th March 2026 · 2020s, 2026, Music

Kim Gordon unveils the title track of her forthcoming third album, along with a striking monochrome video for a minimalist masterpiece.

Whatever might be expected from a new record by pioneering indie legend Kim Gordon, it’s probably not this. Or perhaps it is.

For the Sonic Youth icon has evolved into an eclectic polymath who straddles media; as much a performance artist as a musician, and this is nothing if not that.

Built around claustrophobic hip-hop beats reminiscent of the trip-hop Tricky made in the ’90s, Gordon breathlessly recites the names of Spotify playlists in her trademark deadpan style.

Barney Clay’s black-and-white video perfectly complements the satirical banality of the song’s lyrics, with Gordon traversing a shopping mall on escalators as pixellated passers-by travel in the opposite direction.

Then comes the big reveal with the playlist titles scrolling along screens on LED signs beneath every level of the building.

It’s the first thing I’ve heard from her since last summer’s BYEBYE25, a new version of her song Bye Bye, in which she recites and displays words and phrases that Trump has discouraged.

More recently I enjoyed her cameo as a dominatrix in Kristin Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology Of Water.
