Viagra Boys & Amy Taylor – In Spite Of Ourselves

This is my new favourite duet. Which is quite something considering I’m not a fan of Aussie punksters Amyl & The Sniffers.

None the less, Sebastian Murphy from the former and Amy Taylor of the latter make a perfect update on the original version by John Prine (who wrote it) and his duet parter Iris DeMent.

Especially in the video, deliberately (I assume) amateurishly out of sync, and shot on different sides of the world – Seb in Stockholm, Amy in Melbourne – with cheesy backdrops on a greenscreen.

It helps that the song, in both original and new formats, is so simultaneously romantic and funny; all the more so in Murphy’s characteristically intoxicated drawl, over a woozily wonky electronic backing.

Iris apparently told Prine’s wife it took some courage to sing lines like: “He ain’t got laid in a month of Sundays  / I caught him once and he was sniffin’ my undies.”

I imagine she was even more embarrassed when he sings that “She takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin'” but it’s hard to imagine Amy batting an eyelid at lines like that. Especially from 10,000 miles away.

She was apparently Murphy’s first choice to sing the song with him and, both being country fans, she jumped at the chance. “We’re both insanely feral and gross,” she said. “So the lyrics are perfect.”
