This bass-heavy slice of minimal industrial techno by Maquina may be another first for me – a band from Lisbon.
The aptly named Maquina’s thumping grooves and fuzzy bass ebb and flow like a surging tide of noise that make punks dance and club kids pogo at their incendiary live shows.
Apparently their first UK tour resulted in mosh pit frenzy and I’m pleased to learn they are coming back in September – though not, sadly, to London.
In the meantime there’s their second album, Body Transmission, showcasing their visceral blend of techno, noise rock, motorik metal and industrial punk – music as much for the body as the heart and mind.
The trio is made up of Halison Peres, who combines drums and shouty vocal exhortations, José “Mendy” Rego (bass) and João Cavalheiro (guitar/effects).
Initially trading in sprawling jams, they have tightly honed their sound into a set of three-minute bangers. “We wanted it to feel heavy, focused and relentless,” they say.
It’s certainly that.
