Body Type – Eye Is A Mouth Is A Face

Body Type are a four-piece female band from Sydney, Australia, whose brand of noisy garage-punk is now drifting into a calmer place.

That’s probably due to the presence in the producer’s chair of Stella Mogzawa, the exceptional Australian drummer from Warpaint, and partner of Courtney Barnett, their fellow Sydneysider.

Both bands trade in scuzzy riffs, moody basslines and shimmering guitars, with tuneful melodies and multiple vocalists.

But whereas Mozgawa relocated from Sydney to California, Body Type’s founder Sophie McCornish (guitar, vocals) went the other way, moving from New York to Sydney, with her demos.

She soon formed a band with drummer Cecil Coleman, Annabel Blackman (vocals, guitar) and Georgia Wilkinson-Derums (vocals, bass), making their debut in 2016 with the singles 2 6 4 and Ludlow.

After several years of gigging, it was followed in 2022 by an album whose title could have come from Courtney Barnett herself – Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing Is Surprising.

New album Tally was recorded in LA and features slower tempos and more sophistication, as UK audiences discovered recently when the band toured Europe with Courtney Barnett, for whom Mozgawa also plays drums.
