Today marks the 54th birthday of one of the UK’s finest musicians, Richard D. James, better known as Aphex Twin.
And also occasionally known as Caustic Window, the name he used to release his series of Joyrex recordings in the early 90s.
James is surely the eminence grise of British electro; he’s been pushing the boundaries of the genre since the late Eighties, creating his own distinctive hybrids of techno, ambient, acid and jungle.
He’s even had hit singles in the late Nineties, thanks in no small part to Chris Cunningham’s deeply disturbing videos for Come To Daddy and Windowlicker.
This tune, the opening track from his second release in 1992 – the Xylem Tube EP – is a typically immersive experience, taking the listener on an exhilarating journey of the mind.
It’s almost like a meditation, taking elements of Philip Glass and stirring them in a percussive electronic blender. Close your eyes and drift away.
Happy birthday AFX!
