Badfinger – Come And Get It

10th January 1970 · 1970, 1970s, Music

Badfinger were the first band signed to The Beatles’ new label Apple and this was the fifth single I ever bought, written and produced by Paul McCartney.

Badfinger were the first band signed to Apple, under their previous name The Iveys, and this was their first hit record.

It reached No.4 in January 1970 and appeared in what sounds like a bloody awful film called The Magic Christian, starring Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr, apparently a satire about capitalism and greed.

I had absolutely no idea until right now that Pete Ham and Tom Evans, the creative duo at the heart of Badfinger, also wrote Nilsson’s chart-topping power ballad Without You, which I would go on to buy a year later.

Nor that both of them committed suicide by hanging: a tragic end to a band whose whole career was dogged by legal, managerial and financial problems, denying them the fame and fortune they deserved.

This should have been the beginning of a brilliant career. It remains the high point.
