Bodega – Pillar On The Bridge Of You

In many ways Bodega seem like a computer-generated hipster band from Brooklyn, if not the most pretentious band in the world. But I like ’em.

I liked their first album, I liked seeing them live at The Dome when they first came over, and I like their new single.

It’s their first love song, written by front man Ben Hozie for drummer Nikki Belfiglio, his girlfriend and fellow film student. Which is cute (and, tbh, a bit of a surprise to me).

Shot by Nikki herself, the video uses recently developed experimental film footage she shot in Boston nearly ten years ago, after realising how much the results “rhymed with the architectural, aquatic, and erotic motifs of the lyrics.”

Did I mention pretentiousness? Still, there are worse crimes than that in popular music: many artists have based entire careers on little more than that.

There’s a thin line between pretention and intelligence. And when it comes to that, it’s hard to make a case against them – even though they insist on spelling their names in capitals (BODEGA) and have a song on their new album called NYC (disambiguation).

Nikki recorded versions of their previous single Statuette On The Console in nine different languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and… perspicaciously… Ukrainian.

This one’s only in English, but it’s just great as it is. And so is that video.
