Burning Spear – Slavery Days

20th August 1975 · 1970s, 1975, Music, Reggae

One of the all-time greats of Jamaican reggae, Burning Spear’s Slavery Days is a highlight of his landmark Marcus Garvey album.

This is devotional music at its most intense, with a universal message of hope.

Winston Rodney’s voice carries all the passion of his Rasta beliefs, backed by the equally soulful harmonies of Rupert Willington and Delroy Hinds and the flawless playing of the all-star Black Disciples – Robbie Shakespeare, Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith, Aston Barrett, Tony Chin, Leroy Wallace.

Every track on this album is essential listening – as is the dub version. And he’s still with us, still recording, and has won two Grammys in the 21st century, making him one of the great survivors of reggae music.

For a while there Marley and Spear were neck and neck to hold the crown and, for some of us, Bob is not necessarily the king – even though he broke down the barriers and earned the most rewards.
