C.W. McCall – Convoy

Novelty pop songs don’t come much more annoying than this, at least without children and bagpipes. Except they do – because Convoy prompted an even worse “parody” version.

At least it’s topical 45 years later at a time when truckers – specifically a shortage of them – are back in the news headlines thanks to Brexit.

It’s a tribute to the joys of trucking, with its arcane argot of CB radio slang, and consists of a radio conversation between three truckers whose nicknames are, respectively, Rubber Duck, Pig Pen and, er, Sodbuster. Don’t ask.

Thankfully it was kept off the top of the charts (but only by one place) thanks to Midge Ure with Slik’s dirgey Forever And Ever.

Not only did Convoy inspire a film by Sam Peckinpah – a rare instance of a film following the song, rather than the other way around – but it also spawned a “hilarious” parody version by gropey radio DJ Dave Lee Travis.

Laurie Lingo (geddit?!) & The Dipsticks were the since-disgraced DLT and his fellow Radio 1 DJ Paul Burnett, masquerading as truckers Superscouse and Plastic Chicken.

Their dismal parody Convoy UK reached no.4 in the charts thanks to – or despite – a Top of the Pops appearance featuring the pair dressed as chickens. I don’t recommend digging it out.

In an added irony the DLT version ends with a “jokey” reference to Savile, which seems apt as Travis would go on to be arrested, charged and convicted (of indecent assault) years later by Operation Yew Tree.
