Charlotte Adigéry & Boris Pupul – Blenda

Music with a message doesn’t come much more infectious than Charlotte Adigéry’s anti-racist dance banger, Blenda.

When it comes to racism and sexism, I’m all for a zero-tolerance approach. But sometimes humour can be the best way to challenge prejudices.

Charlotte Adigéry takes that approach and combines it with jittery dance beats and a groove as infectious as Covid on new single Blenda.

Born in France and raised in Belgium, she is (as the title suggests) a blend of European and Afro-Caribbean, her family background going bac to the Yoruba people in Nigeria via the slave trade in Martinique and Guadeloupe.

In what can be seen as a kind of musical parallel to Michaela Coel, Adigéry uses her music to make her points (and her new album tackles sexism, racism and much more besides) through wit, charm and sheer force of personality.

She’s made several records, under her own name and as her punkier alter ego WWWater, after starting out with Belgian electro outfit Soulwax.

In a very different vein she has made a 17-minute spoken word ambient piece called Yin Yang Self-Meditation, in which she reflects on her insecurities and engages in breathing exercises.

Don’t worry, this is nothing like that. Blenda blends influences from disco, funk and house, collaborator Bolis Pupul creating a vibrant ecosystem for Adigéry to shine a light on some of the worst aspects of humanity today while still earning a smile.
