Culture’s debut album Two Sevens Clash was a landmark release back in 1977. Joe Gibbs and I-Roy teamed up on the 12-inch version.

Back in 1977 I subsisted on a musical diet of punk and reggae.

For every time I listened to The Clash or the Pistols or Television’s Marquee Moon, I was playing African Dub Chapter 3, toasters like Tapper Zukie and the vocal harmonies of The Gladiators and Culture.

The first reggae album I really played to death, back in 1977, was Two Sevens Clash by Culture. Catchy songs and sweet harmonies set to hard roots riddims.

I don’t think I ever heard the original 12-inch version of I’m Not Ashamed before, so I had not heard the Joe Gibbs’s wicked dub version (Tight For Shame) or the DJ version (Under Tight Wraps) with I-Roy at his very best, toasting about food shortages.

But I have now.
