Dustin O’Halloran – Spiritus Naturae Aeternus

Soft, soothing and serene, this is the opening movement of Dustin O’Halloran’s new solo album ‘1 0 0 1’ which he describes as “intentional listening.”

Dustin O’Halloran is a prolific film composer and pianist, with an Emmy and an Oscar nomination to his name, and one half of the ambient music duo A Winged Victory Of The Sullen.

This is the first movement of his new solo album for Deutsche Grammophon called ‘1 0 0 1’, which he says is designed for “intentional listening” rather than a background accompaniment to reading, or writing, or cleaning the house.

He insists it should be experienced as a whole, in the same way as we take our time to contemplate a painting or a sculpture – a space in which to slow down and reflect on some of the complex philosophical questions facing our ever more rapidly evolving world.

The album has its own theme too, being “an exploration of nature, consciousness, technology, and the profound implications of artificial intelligence and our understanding of it.” So there’s plenty to ponder and reflect upon while listening.

O’Halloran recorded ‘1 0 0 1’ at Reykjavík’s RRO Studios, where he was joined by his longtime collaborator and fellow composer Bryan Senti on violin, a hand-picked eight-voice choir, Paul Corley of Sigur Rós on electronic production, and the Budapest Art Orchestra orchestrated by Roman Vinuesa.
