Earth, Wind & Fire recorded Happy Feelin’ as an album track back in 1975, a quarter of a century before it formed the basis of a hit single.
It was Fatboy Slim who pointed me in the direction of Groove Armada. Or it could have been The Sopranos. Either way, it was this song that drew me to Earth, Wind & Fire.
Happy Feelin’, an album track from 1975, provides the foundation of the 1999 dance hit I See You Baby.
Initially by the British duo Groove Armada, it was sung by Gram’ma Funk, aka Toi Sojer (aka Latoi D Wooten) and then reworked by Fatboy Slim and popularised in a car advert (and featured in a scene in The Sopranos).
You may even remember the two videos: the original set to a gym workout and the second (for Fatboy Slim’s remix) a bizarre affair featuring a security guard watching CCTV to snoop on women getting changed.
It was a hit twice over – first in 1999 and then five years later when Groove Armada released a Best Of compilation. But first…
The beat behind the tune was created by Earth, Wind & Fire on their exuberant tune Happy Feelin’ and sampled from that track on their 1975 album That’s The Way Of The World.
