Eve – Who’s That Girl?

I was wondering what to post today and then I realised the answer was starting me in the face on New Year’s EVE. So here she is with her 2001 hit Who’s That Girl?

Because what’s not to love about this tune, with its exuberant tropical trumpets giving it a Latin vibe verging on cumbia, and Eve busting out her braggadocio over the top, telling us how she was “born to shine.”

The 1990s were a good time for women in hip-hop, with MCs like Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Foxy Brown and Roxanne Shante.

Eve was a one-time teenage stripper from Philadelphia who started out in an all-girl group called Dope Girl Posse before going solo under the splendid name Eve Of Destruction.

She even appeared on the movie soundtrack for Bulworth in that guise, when signed to Dr Dre’s label, so I must have heard her before I knew it; then she went on to guest on tunes by DMX and The Roots.

This song came from her second album, Scorpion, which found her being dubbed the Queen of Rap, though these days she’s focused more on her successful acting career.

Anyway, here she is… so Happy New Year y’all.
