Ezra Collective – God Gave Me Feet For Dancing

17th July 2024 · 2020s, 2024, Jazz, Soul

This is the perfect soundtrack for a summer’s day, with the sun shining, and the perfect video for a summer night in the city. And today seems like it might (fingers crossed) be that day – and night – at last.

As ever, I am surprising myself by loving a tune that is an example of “jazz” – Afro-jazz if you like – with its lazy, shuffling groove and layered horns. I could listen to it over and over again (and have been doing exactly that since I first heard it).

But it’s more than that, thanks to the soulful vocals of East London singer Yazmin Lacey. There’s something about the slight Jamaican inflection when she sings “Give me bassline, give me dollar wine” slaps a smile on my face and makes me grin from ear to ear.

I’m not hugely familiar with the Ezra Collective but I remember they won the Mercury Music Prize last year – the first jazz band to do so – and I’ll be investigating further.

Yazmin’s own material is also well worth checking out on Bandcamp, hovering in the hinterland between soul and jazz, especially a tune called Morning Matters.

In the meantime, here she is with the Ezra Collective – Femi Koleoso, TJ Koleoso, Joe Armon-Jones, James Mollison and Ife Ogunjobi – from their aptly titled new album Dance – No One’s Watching.

Tajana Tokyo’s video is fantastic and when one commenter says “Everything about this makes me proud to be black” I know exactly what they mean. And if it weren’t for my pale skin, and two left feet, I’d echo that!
