Family Stereo – Fault Lines

Family Stereo is the stage name of Blake Watt, son of Everthing But The Girl duo Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, which may well explain why this pretty folk-pop tune is so appealing. Because the apple is Blake Watt, son of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt. Which is quite some tree.

Just like their tunes, the lovely melody of this song – Fault Lines – floats around a gently pulsing rhythm, an insistent guitar motif and shivers of ethereal synth.

For me, the music, especially the way the drums and guitar lines intersect, could be from an especially laid-back song by The National.

I hear a bit of The Beatles in the verses, too – perhaps it’s Blakes vocal – though the chorus, with its euphoric harmonies, is different again. And just as lovely.

He started out as a drummer before taking up the guitar at the age of 15, and cites influences including Elliott Smith, John Martyn, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Adrianne Lenker.

He’s already released a string of singles and played numerous gigs – including an appearance with the reunited Everything But The Girl at Moth Club last year –  and now comes his debut album, The Thread, from which this song is taken.

Producer Sam Hodder-Williams provided string arrangements and multitasked across acoustic/electric guitar, mandolin, synths and more, complemented by Pendo Masote on violin, Tom Allan on banjo, Ella Bleakley on backing vocals and George Vaux on bass.

“Musically, I wanted to explore folk songwriting but with a kind of lush arrangement,” says Blake. “Sam is very good at realising a sound… I wanted to explore the pared-back thing but then his arrangements are quite lush, and I think they complement each other quite nicely.”

So do I. And I expect to be hearing much more of Family Stereo.
