Gallagher & Lyle – Heart On My Sleeve

26th September 2021 · 1970s, 1976, Music

Here is another lazy, hazy number with a laid-back summery vibe from a folk-flavoured Scottish duo with roots in the blues and country.

Gallagher and Lyle sound like a firm of solicitors, or an offshoot of the colonial sugar dynasty. In fact they were a Scottish musical duo comprising singer-songwriters Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle.

Their sleepy soft-rock style made this song ideal listening in that long hot summer, when it became their second song in a row (after I Wanna Stay With You) to reach no.6 in the charts.

It seems equally and eminently suitable for these dog days of our Indian summer in 2021. In fact it’s lovely.

The credits tell me Benny is the Kevin Keegan lookalike playing the accordion, which means Graham must be the beardy bloke with the cap and guitar singing the song.

They’d been around forever when this was a hit, joining their first group in 1959 (The Bluefrets) and enjoying their first recognition in 1968 when The Beatles signed them up to write for other artists on their Apple label, including Mary Hopkin.

They were also founding members of the rather livelier and much rootsier McGuinness Flint, writing their two hits When I’m Dead And Gone and Malt And Barley Blues.

They then became members of Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance, playing on both their hit singles – How Come and The Poacher. Their two big hits under their own name both came from Breakaway, their fifth album as Gallagher & Lyle.

They split up in 1980 but have worked both jointly and individually on countless records by artists including McCartney, Clapton and Townshend, and their songs have been covered by artists from Bryan Ferry to Art Garfunkel.

They reunited 30 years later and worked together intermittently until very recently.h
