Hinds – Boom Boom Bang

When it comes to girl groups, you can keep yer Spice Girls, All Saints, Girls Aloud and Sugababes and give me a band like the Slits, Shonen Knife or Las Kellies. Or Hinds.

The Spanish band blend garage rock with pop melodies and their latest has attracted big-name guests including Fontaines front man Grian Chatten and, on this frothy slice of frivolous fun, Beck.

Indeed, fun would seem to be the watchword of Hinds, whose rambunctious energy and joyous camaraderie is infectious – as can be seen in the video.

They were formed by Carlotta Casials and Ana Perrote in Madrid in 2011 under the name Deers but had to change it for legal reasons.

Expanding to a quartet, they released three albums over the past decade but after their last album, the more pop-oriented The Prettiest Curse, their bassist and drummer left, they split with their management team, and were without a label for the first time.

Now they’re back as a duo of co-founders, co-vocalists, co-guitarists and co-songwriters Carlotta and Ana – and a new album called Viva Hinds, with a UK tour to follow in February.

Fun fact: they previously released a cover version of The Clash song Spanish Bombs (even though they’re not from Andalucia). And there’s nothing punkier than the T-shirt worn by the one on the left.
