Horace Andy – Money, The Root Of All Evil

22nd September 1976 · 1970s, 1976, Music, Reggae

With his fragile, quavery voice, Horace Andy is one of the most distinctive figures in reggae music – and equally familiar for his work with trip-hop maestros Massive Attack.

He has a back catalogue stretching back to the late Sixties at Studio One, where he first made his name with original version of Skylarking in 1972 – re-recorded a year later with Bunny Lee, and King Tubby at the mixing desk for a killer dub version.

More than 20 years later he was brought to a new audience by Bristol’s trip-hop collective Massive Attack, appearing as a guest singer live and on record since their landmark debut Blue Lines in 1991.

Thanks to them – and their release of a compilation album named after his signature tune, Skylarking – his quavery tones have reached a new, younger audience all over the world.

I could have chosen any tune, from Skylarking itself to a Massive Attack number like Spying Glass, but I particularly love this song with a message, which showcases his voice so well, and has a great version by producer Phil Pratt.
