By 1976 I was losing interest in the singles chart, beyond getting my weekly fix of Top of the Pops. So I missed this at the time.

Consequently, I don’t actually remember this imaginary blaxploitation soundtrack at all. But it’s fantastic.

Cashing in on the dance craze, Isaac Hayes called his instrumental album Disco Connection, but this is a far cry from divas in glittery ballgowns. And it still sounds great today.

This was the title track, a blistering toe tapper with whipcrack beats, funky guitar, euphoric brass arrangements and sweeping strings, Hayes conducting all of them himself in a studio filled with 25 musicians – and that’s without counting the string section
