Joaquin Phoenix’s sad version of this song was one of the many delightful surprises I discovered when I watched Joker: Folie A Deux in an otherwise empty cinema last night.
Over the closing credits Phoenix sings his spare interpretation of the late Daniel Johnston’s finest, and saddest, song, True Love Will Find You In The End.
I’d been put off seeing the film by the many harsh reviews – of the movie and of his singing voice – but over the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed a change, with a handful of friends reporting that they had loved it.
Me too.
And although it’s been portrayed as a musical, it isn’t really. Yes there are songs – mostly old standards from the great American songbook – sung by Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
But they fit seamlessly into the narrative of what is otherwise a gritty film set among the filth and violence of Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane – where Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck (aka Joker) meets Gaga’s Lee Quinzell (aka Harley Quinn), and in the courtroom where he stands trial for the murders committed in the first film.
I found the sung sections strangely moving, and endearing, and enjoyed the fantasy scenes such as the pastiche of Sonny & Cher, and Gaga’s lonesome, mournful take on The Carpenters’ Close To You, sung through prison cell bars to Phoenix.
Anyway; check out the soundtrack – and see the movie, which also stars Brendan Gleeson as a brutal prison guard, who tells the only actually funny joke in the film, and for fans of Industry (and if you’re not why not?!), Harry Lawtey cross-examining Ken Leung in court.
I guarantee it’s not as bad as you thought. (Unless you think it is).
