As a lifelong T. Rex fan I  was always going to adore this heartfelt hommage to Bolan by Mick Harvey and Amanda Acevedo. And I do.

Not just for the music but especially for the lyric, cleverly constructed from fragments of Bolan’s lyrics, both familiar and imagined; part pastiche, part loving homage to his gift for surreal imagery.

Growing up, I loved those rhyming couplets as much as the visceral thrill of the music: “She’s my woman of gold and she’s not very old.” “She ain’t no witch and I love the way she twitch.” “She’s faster than most and she lives on the coast.” And that’s just one song.

“I drive a Rolls-Royce cos it’s good for my voice.” “Oh Debora, always look like a zebra.” “Metal guru has it been, Just like a silver-studded sabre-tooth dream.” And so many more.

The vocal is carried mostly by Harvey, in contrast to the woozy psychedelia of their previous single, Perfect Storm, which found Acavedo crooning ethereally over a maelstrom of fuzzy guitars and synths.

Both tracks come from their forthcoming third album together Psychedelia In White – the follow-up to Phantasmagoria In Blue and their covers album Golden Mirrors, returning to themes of mythology, love, hope, loss and mysticism.
