Mourning Service are an American goth band in thrall to the gloom-mongers of the early Eighties nearly half a century later.

I can imagine stumbling across this band in the early Eighties, perhaps supporting Bauhaus or The Sisters Of Mercy. But they weren’t even born back then.

Mourning Service come from Portland, Oregon, and were formed by Z (“writing and vocals”) and Sky (synthesizer).

Their lineup and nomenclatures have both expanded since then to include bass guitarist Tom McGee and drummer Mason Galo, who seems to have missed the video shoot.

Their devotion to the Goth genre was clear on their first release, Halloween Haunts, in 2025, and song titles like Lament and Tristesse, Where Loneliness Awaits, Ghosts and – of course – Death.

One of their records even came with a black coffin sticker.

It comes as not the biggest surprise to learn that they were inspired to form a band by listening to The Sisters Of Mercy, after a friend of Z – now going by “Zombie Thirteen” – noticed the similarity between Andrew Eldritch’s voice and his.

Leaving his band Morphesia, he decided to form  new outfit “rooted in my interest in goth, post-punk, darkwave, and deathrock.” And here they are.
