I’ve been a fan of NewDad’s shimmering dream pop ever since they started releasing a string of singles while they still at school in Galway.
Following their debut album Madra last year and the recent EP Safe, this new tune, Pretty, is a hymn to their hometown.
“It’s a love song for the thing we hold dearest – home,” says singer Julie Dawson. “Even on its dullest days there’s a beauty and a magic about Galway and that’s what inspired this song.”
The video was filmed there – obviously – on what was “even for Galway and insanely windy and rainy day” (opening lyric: “The sky is black / The clouds are grey”) with the band visiting some of their favourite spots around the city.
NewDad came together in 2018 when school friends Dawson (guitar, vocals), Áindle O’Beirn (bass) and Fiachra Parslow (drums) asked their friend Sean O’Dowd, who was studying music technology in Limerick, to produce their first recordings – and, eventually, to join them on lead guitar.
Today they are a trio of Dawson, Parslow and O’Dowd, and continuing to make music as a kind of 21st century Cocteau Twins. Including this other new tune, Roobosh.
