Parade – Stick Up Kid

Parade are a South London collective whose ambitious creative endeavours encompass music, performance, film and visual art.

Of the many unsolicited emails about new music I receive, most fail the 20-second test – and that’s if I get as far as pressing play. This one had me listening to the end, and eager to hear more.

As with much of the best music, Parade are hard to categorise, and this tune – Stick Up Kid – doesn’t sound like anyone else I can think of, which can be a good thing too.

They are an ever-evolving nine-piece collective from south London who marked their arrival with an eclectic mixtape last year called Lightning Hit The Trees, led by a pair of singles: I shot Him and Foxtrot.

They sound very different from each other, and Stick Up Kid sounds different again. Their laid-back experimental vibe has touches of those early Beta Band Eps to my ears.

Apparently this track’s tale of a many-handed thief started life in the Forest Hill shipping container where Parade made their first mixtape before being marched east to 160DL Studios in Dalston – their first experience of a proper studio.

To continue their thirst for the lo-fi experimentation, they brought with them some of the trusty broken equipment that had shaped their sound, sometimes playing the guitar using the drawstring of a hoody, with recordings sometimes spilling out of the studio and into the event space next door.

A rotating cast took part, with peripheral contributors becoming permanent members, previously silent members opening their mouths, and different voices – Owen and Fiorella, Yottie and Owen, Yottie and Fiorella, Fiorella and Louis – finding their counterpart in unison, harmonies and duets.

Producer, engineer, and instrumentalist Callum’s vocals are heard for the first time; Isaac finds more space for freedom and arrangement; cellist and improviser Noah drifts into a permanent role and Toby, while in New York working as an artist, moves into a creative role from afar.

Not just a band but also an art collective, they have an exciting 48 hour event planned in late November, involving a mixture of live performances, installations, listening sessions and “unexpected encounters” involving not only them but other artists, DJs and secret guests.

It’s happening on 25 and 26 November, beginning in Bermondsey – at Venue MOT – and ending at Hackney Downs Studio.
