Pole – Grauer Sand

I love a bit of glitchy ambient electronica, me. And this track by Pole – aka innovative German electronic artist Stefan Betke – is exactly that.

The Düsseldorf-born, Berlin-based musician, producer and mastering engineer has a unique musical language oscillating between melody and avant-garde.

Here, as in his other work, you can hear elements of dub and jazz in the ambient groove – an influence inherited from his earlier work with the dub-informed techno label Basic Channel.

He typically runs his minimalist bass-heavy tracks through a sound-processing device called a 4-Pole Filter.

The gadget gave him his stage name, and gives the tunes their mysterious glitch with its randomly produced clicks and crackles.

Betke has been making music as Pole since the late nineties when he released his epochal electronic trilogy 1 (1998), 2 (1999) and 3 (2000).

His most recent release, Fading, dealt with dementia and the loss of memory.

This comes from his forthcoming album Tempus, due out in November.
