Pussycat – Mississippi

I know I shouldn’t but I love this cheesy country music pastiche by Pussycat – perhaps the only country-and-western chart topper by a Dutch group.

I doubt I liked it when it came out back in 1976 but it wormed its way into my musical brain and it’s never gone away.

The three Kowalkczyk sisters -Tonny, Betty and Marianne – first came to fame in their native Netherlands as Zingende Zusjes (The Singing Sisters), with a repertoire of German-language songs.

Adding a female drummer to the brew, the group completely revamped their sound and changed their name to “The BG’s From Holland” in a nod to the burgeoning big beat movement sweeping their country, before releasing their debut single under another new name, Sweet Reaction.

By 1975 they had recruited drummer Theo Coumans, bassist Theo Wetzels, and guitarist John Theunissen, and updated their image once again, re-emerging as Pussycat.

Mississippi, inspired apparently by The Bee Gees’ Massachusetts, was their first single – and became a global hit.
