Melbourne band Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever return with their first music for four years, Sunburned In London.
I freely admit I was drawn to this band by its unusual name – Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. It’s a reliable guide for me, and it didn’t disappoint.
I’m also virtually guaranteed to love a triple-guitar line-up and those three jangling guitars, the languid lead vocals, and the euphoric harmonies of three singers all instantly appeal.
They’re like a janglier, guitarier, version of The Go-Betweens.
And there’s something about the gentle twang of an Australian accent that creates a warm embrace in the depths of winter enhanced, no doubt, by the song title – Sunburned In London.
“As a band, we have always made songs about cities,” explains lead singer Tom Russo. “I was thinking about sensory overload and relentless beauty, and the creeping feeling in the streets that the party’s winding up and the lights are about to come on.”
The band was formed in Melbourne in 2013 by high school bandmates Tom Russo, cousins Fran Keaney and Joe White – all guitarists and vocalists – and a rhythm section of Tom’s brother Joe on bass and drummer Marcel Tussie.
This is their first new music for four years and, as you may have gleaned, I love it.
