Sabrina Carpenter – Espresso

Never let it be said that I’ve no room in my life for pop music – proper, popular, chart-friendly, hands-in-the-air, dance-around-the-kitchen pop.

I love a catchy tune and a nonsense lyric: after all, I grew up singing along to T. Rex (“I drive a Rolls-Royce cos it’s good for my voice”) and The Sweet (“We just haven’t got a clue what to do!”) and Bowie’s Jean Genie (“keeps all your dead hair for making up underwear”).

This is firmly in the same tradition.

Espresso is the song that’s knocked the all-conquering Taylor Swift off the top of the charts with its reggae-tinged disco beat, its bright and breezy summer-holiday-friendly video and its fantastically meaningless chorus that you’ll be singing all day: “That’s that me espresso.”

And it’s partially Tay’s own fault. Because for the past few months Sabrina Carpenter has been her support act as Tay took her Eras tour around the world, bigging her up as a “sweet angel princess” and bequeathing her a ready-made audience of millions.

So who is Sabrina? Inevitably, she ‘s emerged from the same Disney stable that brought us Britney and Miley and (most recently) Olivia Rodrigo, and was signed to a five-album deal at the age of 12.

More interestingly, the home-schooled prodigy is the niece of the lady who does Bart’s voice on The Simpsons (kudos!). She’s also the current girlfriend of Banshees/Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan.

I’m sure there are those who would suggest that young Barry, who grew up in foster homes after a childhood of desperate poverty and addiction, is punching above his weight.

Not me though.
