There are deep cuts and then there are deeper cuts. This UK reggae gem by Sharon Little falls into the latter category.
It’s the only recording I can find anywhere by Sharon Little and I can find out nothing at all about her, except that she’s British, and released it on her own 1 Love label in 1981.
It was a big favourite of Jah Shaka in the Zulu Warrior’s days as the king of the (South) London sound systems and it’s got a killer dub version produced by two names unfamiliar to me.
And that’s it… except to say that 8.5 million hits for an obscure one-off reggae tune from nearly half a century ago is pretty impressive. Reading between the lines, I think she re-recorded the song some years later, as there are different versions with different producers listed.
Someone deep in the many YouTube comments claims to have worked with her but the biographical detail is sketchy beyond the fact that she was (not my words) “short and solidly built with short natural hair” and “very modest and understated as a person.”
Sadly there’s also a message from a friend saying she died in December 2023.
