Sharon Van Etten is one of several artists interpreting Tom Petty on the soundtrack of Bad Monkey, based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel.

As a big fan of Carl Hiaasen I was excited to see the recent Apple TV adaptation of his book Bad Monkey.

Sadly it’s no more successful at capturing the spirit of his novels – a satirical blend of crime, politics and eco campaigning – than previous adaptations such as Showgirls.

Perhaps his books are just unfilmable; the appeal lies mainly in his writing, whereas on film the absurdism of his plots tends towards the slapstick.

Still, I managed to watch it all the way through, mesmerised by Vince Vaughn’s hair weave and strangely unappealing locations in the Florida Keys and Bahamas.

And the soundtrack’s been great: multiple cover versions of Tom Petty songs by different artists.
