Siouxsie – Here Comes That Day

Siouxsie Sioux channels her inner Shirley Bassey to sing the best Bond theme never to appear in a Bond movie.

When I began watching the new thriller series The Iris Affair, the first thing that struck me was the song over the opening titles.

With its sweeping strings, swooping synths, parping trumpets and dramatic vocals, it instantly sets the tone.

We immediately know we are (going to be) in for some excitingly Bond-ish business – complete with multiple locations, multiple chases, and a supervillain in a secret bunker. And we are.

Its brassy blast reminds us of Shirley Bassey, who famously sang three real Bond themes – the stone-cold classic Goldfinger, the just-as-stone-cold classic Diamonds Are Forever, and the comparatively forgettable Moonraker (in the sense that I’ve forgotten it).

But it’s not. So who is it?

I actually thought it probably was Shirley Bassey, but I Shazam’d it to be sure. And it’s not… It’s Siouxsie.

Yes, that Siouxsie – Siouxsie Sioux – and while I’ve read that she composed it especially for the series, that’s not actually true because she premiered the song with the Banshees on Later… With Jools back in 2007.
