Skinshape – High Tide Storm Rising

Skinshape is a new name to me but I’ve enjoyed discovering their mostly instrumental blend of atmospheric trip-hop with ’60s and ’70s funk, reggae, soul and psych-rock.

I say “their” but Skinshape is a one-man operation: the studio project of instrumentalist/producer Will Dorey, formerly bass guitarist in Palace – the British indie band, not Will Oldham’s group – and producer for reggae label Horus Records.

Dorey composes the music, writes the lyrics, plays all the instruments (except drums), sings and produces the records himself, the diverse elements sounding somehow familiar yet assembled in a way that’s entirely new.

The atmospheric sound reminds me of the laid-back vibe of Khruangbin, and it’s no surprise that Spotify’s algorithm auto-played them when this tune came to an end.

Growing up in Dorset, Dorey cites early influences ranging from Pink Floyd to the Bonzos, as well as Afrobeat, British psych-rock and reggae.

He left Palace to launch Skinshape in 2014, releasing multiple albums under the name, working in parallel as a DJ and remixer.
