Lightly treading a line between hip-hop beats and indie-pop, SOFY’s intimate, conversational style is strangely addictive.

It’s like an update on that style of autobiographical spoken word storytelling that Lily Allen brought into vogue 20 years ago and was taken up by others including Kate Nash, Just Jack and Jamie T.

Raised in Leicester but now resident in East London – or so I’m guessing from the lyrical reference to Kingsland Road – she topped a Londonwide talent search by Radio 1 and was runner-up to Bonnie Kemplay nationally.

She would probably hate anyone to say she’s a British Billie Eilish but there’s something of the same confessional intimacy in her singing and lyrics, and both share a fondness for oversize clothes.

Like some other artists such as Dry Cleaning’s Florence Shaw, she finds lyrical inspiration in eavesdropping on conversations on public transport,orrandom TV shows, and making notes on her phone.

SOFY first came to attention (but not mine!) five years ago with a song called Strawberry Milkshake, which struck a chord with young listeners, and this is her new single. 

“Superfriend is written about friendship,” she says. “Specifically, friendship that anchors you through periods of change, and feels like home no matter how much the world around you feels different.

“Moving to London from the Midlands has felt like a bit of a culture shock at times, so there’s something really special about friends that have known you through every phase of life.”
