Steady Habits – Hold In Your Breath

Steady Habits sound like an old-timey country music band from somewhere in the American South – but actually come from Oxford.

I’ve always been a sucker for a maudlin country ballad with a weeping pedal steel and a nostalgic lyric, though I generally prefer my country music to come from the American South.

I’m willing to make an exception for Steady Habits, who hail not from traditional country heartlands like Texas or Tennessee but the Home Counties of England… Oxford, to be specific.

Four of the five-man band are English but their main man and sole songwriter, Steve Duggan, does come from America – though almost as far from the Deep South as from those dreaming spires.

Duggan’s hometown is New Haven, Connecticut, where he and his brother Kevin Michael once had a harmony-driven folk-country duo called Loud Mountains.

When they split up in 2014, Sean moved to Oxford and, inspired by his nostalgia for the Americana of his homeland, formed a new group called Steady Habits.

The other four members are made up of some of Oxford’s finest musicians, including members of The Dreaming Spires, Great Western Tears, The Greasy Slicks and Speed Buggy USA.
