The Bee Gees & Gwen Stefani – Stayin’ Alive/Hollaback Girl

The Bee Gees’ disco classic Stayin’ Alive interwoven with Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl turns out to make the perfect mash-up marriage.

I imagine fans of No Doubt were confused, if not aghast, when Gwen Stefani swapped ska-punk for hip-hop on her solo debut Hollaback Girl.

Ditching rock instruments altogether, she hooked up with production duo The Neptunes and rapped over an R&B backing built on little more than sparse beats.

Despite mixed reviews, and aided by a video featuring Stefani as a cheerleader, as well as a nod to Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust, it was a huge hit.

There are some great remixes of the song too, including one by Diplo that doesn’t much appeal to me, and another by No Doubt bass guitarist Tony Kanal, featuring reggae toaster Elan Atias, which very much does.

I found them all after reading an excellent interview with Mark Ronson by Pete Paphides in which he recalls making a mash-up of Hollaback Girl with the instrumental theme of Top Gun when he DJed at Tom Cruise’s birthday party.

I searched for it in vain online, but in the course of my investigations I did discover another fantastic mash-up version, syncing Stefani with Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees, and it’s the perfect fit.
