This long-forgotten garage band was the first group my friend Craig Poland Smith ever got to see, at East Aurora High School in upstate New York in 1965.
They came from nearby Buffalo and this was one of the three singles they released. In fact it was the B-side of their debut single, a cover of Train Kept A Rollin’ in July 1966.
Its 12-string jangle immediately recalls Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds – especially My Back Pages – but with more of a rough and ready garage sound.
I don’t know much about them but the song is credited to Jim Peretti, Bob Rodell and Mike Spriggs so I’m guessing they’re the band members.
They had their own club in Buffalo called The Rogues Gallery but I guess Craig never got to go there as he was still at school and the band broke up in 1967.
Despite their disappearance, this song reappeared decades later on a compilation called Teenage Shutdown Vol.5.
Weirdly, in view of the quick turnaround of releases over the course of a single year, their other two sound completely different.
Say You Love Me is a harmony-drenched ballad with a twangy B-side, Secondary Man that has one of the oddest endings you’ll ever hear, filled with backwards guitar.
Meanwhile, their final single, The Rest Of The Way, is all strings and lovelorn vocals, as is its B-side, Should You Care, as the band abandoned its garage roots completely.
